Rwanda successfully embraces mediation

Rwanda embraces mediation in 2020, with over a 90% success rate, and over $15b value of cases successfully resolved…and counting.

One of the (many) positive pillars of mediation is the success rate for resolving disputes, anecdotally we hear around 80% of disputes that are mediated resolve.

There has been a 50% increase each year from 2019 in cases coming before the courts. Mediation has been and continues to be a success, with more cases being directed to mediation as a result of its own success.

It is staggeringly impressive that the success rate of mediation in Rwanda sits over 90%!

Rwanda embraced mediation in 2020 because of the backlog in the court system, with its Supreme Court publishing a list of the first tranche of mediators, to assist waiting parties.

The Ministry of Justice is now prioritising alternative dispute resolution through policy, which it is anticipated will require the parties in almost all civil, administrative, labour, and commercial disputes to attempt mediation, before being able to enter a court process.

In a landmark report from the Rwandan judiciary, it quantified the monetary value of disputes resolved through mediation as over Rwf11 billion – some $15 billion NZD.
